マル: Isle of Mull

マルはスコットランドの西海岸、オーバンの沖にある島です。インナー・ヘブリディーズ諸島で2番目に大きな島で、紀元前6000年から人が住んでいました。14世紀からはLoad of the Islesの統治下に、15世紀からはマクレアン氏族の統治下に、17世紀からはキャンベル氏族に統治されていました。18～19世紀のハイランド・クリアランスでは、1万人いた人口は4千人にまで減少しました。現在は、近隣の島と合わせて人口は1800人ほどですが、観光地としてとても人気があります。島の中心はトバモリー、海岸沿いの美しい町です。蒸留所があり、トバモリーの名前のウイスキーを作っています。島のおおくはヒースの野原と山地で、オジロワシを含む数多くの鳥が生息しています。

Ferry/フェリー

マル島はObanから渡ります。フェリーポートはCraignureにありますが、島の中心はTobermoryです。Tobermoryにもフェリーポートがありますが、ここからは北の対岸のKilchoanへしか行けません。

CraignureとTobermoryはバスで結ばれています。1時間に1本、乗車時間は50分です。

Craignureからは南回りでFionnphortへ行くバスも出ています。Fionnphortからはアイオナ島へ行くことが出来ます。

Tobermoryからは島の北西、Cargaryへ行くバスも出ています。

蒸留所、水族館ともにトバモリーはバス停に近く、博物館も町中で訪問容易です。Duart Castleはオーバンからのフェリーポートからタクシーで10分ほど。Old Byne Heritage Centreでは島の昔の生活を見ることが出来ます。訪問には車が必要です。
